Glasgow Ultimate

Strathclyde Ultimate Frisbee, Dark Horses, has been around for the best part of 10 years and competes principally in the open and mixed university competitions as well as a handful of other tournaments, both indoors and outdoors.

After mixed results in the early part of 2009 Dark Horses began the latest indoor season positively, taking 2 teams to most tournaments and always finishing with at least one team in the top half. The first notable tournament of the season was Edinburgh Beginners where we took one team, battled hard all weekend long, partied hard on the Saturday night and were rewarded with a finishing position of 8th out of 28 teams.

Perhaps our most impressive results of the season so far have been Discgow and Glasgow Iron 5’s. These were both open tournaments, attracting a lot of non university teams with some very experienced players. We recruited only one non university player to help us out at Discgow and beat a top St Andrews team on our way to a 6th place finish out of 16. A few weeks later we topped this at Glasgow Iron 5’s where we entered a team solely of students. Our squad of 6 players gelled really well and we topped our group without too much difficulty. We were unlucky not to make the final after going 5-2 up against Discmen in the semi final before they came back to win 9-8. In the end we finished 4th out of 20 and were the 1st placed all university team, a fantastic result.

We are looking forward to the start of the 2010 season, the first tournament being mixed indoors followed by open outdoor regionals shortly after. We are hoping for results that will put us in Div 1 or Div 2 Nationals in both these tournaments. Other key aims for the future are to establish a woman’s squad whilst continuing to grow and improve the club as a whole. All levels of players are welcome to come along, learn from the experienced players and enjoy the social scene.
