Glasgow Ultimate

In 2008 a group of experienced Glasgow players put together an indoor team with the intention of qualifying for and winning UKU open indoor nationals. As it was ‘only indoors’ the ethos of the team was simply to have as much fun playing/traveling/partying together as we did winning. The team consists of a band of superheroes, who play in white and are out to rid indoor tournaments of boring one dimensional play, and a band of super villains, who play in black and are out to destroy good natured teams chances of winning anything. Each player has their own good and bad ultimate related alter ego.

After a successful first season, winning Discgow, Open Qualifiers in Sheffield and our assault on Nationals cruelly ended at the semi final stage (losing by one point to eventual winners Old Skool), we decided to open up a little more to try and include more people into our team. In 2009 we entered two teams into a tournament for the first time and have already begun our second attempt to win UKU indoor nationals by qualifying in Glasgow. In December we won another trophy for the cabinet after triumph at Glasgows first Iron 5s tournament.

Still to come for Discmen in 2010 is Indoor Nationals, with home advantage, and what promises to be an exciting and what I think will be a very successful/eventful mixed season. Rosters are full this season but if you are a fit and ambitious player, Discmen 2010/2011 could be the very thing to keep you going through the cold winter months in Glasgow.
